Chapter 1
What Yoga Is — and Isn't
The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, often translated as "to join" or "to yoke". For thousands of years in India, yoga was a broad discipline of ethics, self-study, breath, concentration and meditation, of which physical postures were only one part. The modern image of yoga — flexible people in elaborate poses — captures just a sliver of it.
This book focuses on the parts that most beginners start with: asana (postures), pranayama (breath), and relaxation and meditation. Practised regularly, these three improve flexibility, strength, balance, posture and breathing, and many people find they help with stress and sleep.
What yoga isn't
• It isn't a flexibility contest. Flexibility is a result of practice, not a requirement for it.
• It isn't only for the young, slim or supple. Yoga can be adapted for almost any body, age and fitness level.
• It isn't a religion you must adopt. Yoga grew from Indian philosophical traditions, and many practitioners find meaning in that; others practise purely for health. Both are welcome.
• It isn't a cure for disease. Yoga can support wellbeing alongside medical care, but it doesn't replace it.
The book continues for 65 pages across 15 chapters.
