About this book

Lifters often treat cardio as an enemy that steals gains — or as a punishment for eating too much. Both views are wrong. The right conditioning makes you healthier, recovers you faster between sets and sessions, improves body composition, and adds years to your life — without costing you strength.

This book explains the energy systems, heart-rate zones and the real evidence on the "interference effect". It gives you practical plans for zone 2, intervals and sport-specific conditioning; shows how to combine them with strength training; and covers training in Indian heat, monsoon and winter smog.

For lifters, busy professionals and anyone who wants a stronger heart without burning out.

Chapter 1

Why Lifters Need Conditioning

Strength training builds the chassis; conditioning builds the engine. A lifter with poor aerobic fitness gets breathless walking up stairs, recovers slowly between heavy sets, and carries a higher long-term risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the strongest predictors of long-term health in the research literature — people with higher fitness levels tend to live longer, healthier lives.

What conditioning gives a lifter

The burnout trap

Many people approach cardio with all-out intensity every time: gasping HIIT classes five days a week on top of heavy lifting. That combination often leads to exhaustion, stalled strength, poor sleep and dropping out. The solution isn't less conditioning — it's smarter conditioning, built mostly on easy work with small amounts of hard effort.

Most of your conditioning should feel easy. The fittest endurance athletes in the world do the large majority of their training at low intensity — and they're anything but unfit.
