About this book
Fitness isn't only about how you look in the mirror. It's about lifting your child without your back complaining, carrying shopping up three flights of stairs, getting up from the floor easily, and staying independent as you age.
This book teaches functional fitness: training the movement patterns you use every day — squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, carrying, rotating, lunging and getting up and down — so that strength in the gym transfers to strength in life. It includes simple self-tests, safe lifting technique for daily tasks, three 12-week programmes (home, gym and minimal time), and practical advice for desk workers, parents, travellers and older adults.
For anyone who wants to feel capable, confident and pain-free in daily life.

Chapter 1
What Is Functional Fitness?
"Functional" fitness simply means training that improves your ability to do the physical tasks of your life.
The idea
Every daily task is built from a few basic movement patterns:
What functional fitness is not
• It's not standing on wobble boards while juggling.
• It's not only bodyweight training.
• It's not a replacement for strength — strong muscles are the foundation of function.
The most functional thing you can be is strong. Function is strength, expressed through good movement.
Why It Matters
Benefits
• Fewer aches from daily tasks.
• Lower risk of strains when lifting and carrying.
• Better balance and lower fall risk.
• Easier stairs, travel and play.
• More independence with age.
The ageing curve
Without training, adults lose muscle mass and strength gradually from around their 30s, accelerating after 60. Power — the ability to move quickly — declines even faster. Training can slow, stop or partially reverse these changes at any age (Vol. 7, Vol. 60).
The book continues for 66 pages across 26 chapters.
