Whey Protein and Creatine for Beginners: What Works, What's Hype (India Guide)

Walk into any supplement shop and you'll be told you need five products to build muscle. You don't. Food, training and sleep do the heavy lifting. But two supplements are well researched and genuinely useful for many people.

Whey protein: convenient food, not magic

Whey is simply protein from milk. It's useful when you can't reach your protein target from meals — common in vegetarian Indian diets.

  • How much protein overall? A common target for people lifting weights is about 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day. Work out yours below.
  • One scoop usually gives 20–25 g protein. Most people need 0–2 scoops a day, depending on diet.
  • When? Any time. Total daily protein matters far more than timing.

How to choose a genuine whey in India

  • Buy from the brand's official site or an authorised seller, not the cheapest marketplace listing.
  • Check for an FSSAI licence number and batch details on the pack.
  • Prefer products with third-party lab testing published for the batch.
  • Look at protein per serving vs. scoop size — 24 g protein in a 30 g scoop is reasonable; 20 g in a 45 g scoop means lots of filler.

Creatine monohydrate: the most-studied supplement

Creatine helps muscles produce energy for short, hard efforts, and is linked to better strength and muscle gains alongside training.

  • Dose: 3–5 g of creatine monohydrate a day, every day.
  • Loading isn't necessary — it just gets you there a little faster.
  • Expect a small increase in body water and weight in the first weeks. That's normal.
  • Plain monohydrate is enough — fancy forms cost more without clear extra benefit.

People with kidney disease or other medical conditions should speak to a doctor before using creatine or high-protein diets.

What to skip as a beginner

  • "Fat burners" with stimulants.
  • Mass gainers, if you can simply eat more food.
  • BCAAs if you already eat enough protein.
  • Anything promising steroid-like results.
